Executive and Leadership Team Coaching - Family Business
"This series of team coaching sessions were conducted for a team of 7 business owners who worked in different roles in the company, preparing themselves for the future transformation of a family global business. The sessions, held in Singapore, used Gallup's CliftonStrengths profiling tool alongside ontological coaching to help the individuals identify their dominant talent themes and explore how these talents guide them in decision making and leadership. The sessions have been ongoing and more than 4 sessions have been done till date. Participants have reported a deeper level of awareness of how their roles as owners, leaders and family are concurrently playing out. There is increased safety and trust as a group.
This is a series of Team Coaching sessions with seven business owners who also each hold a different leadership role in the context of the global family business. One unique thing is that they are also siblings and cousins. In the context of family business renewal, this group is clear about the huge challenge facing them - how can this second generation continue to build on the legacy left behind by their parents’ generation and thrive in a very different business context compared to what the first generation has faced? This is a unique challenge facing many family business and this group chooses to a team coaching intervention to explore solutions.
As a team coach, my role is to help each of them see and understand the conversation dynamics that are not clearly visible. In the context of a family business, each of them play 3 concurrent roles (the same individual has to wear the hat of the owner, a business leader and family member simultaneously). This emotional complexity influences decision-making beyond profit and efficiency. Stewardship, legacy, and generational continuity are part of the priorities. There is also the process of transitioning leadership. It is not just about competencies in running the business. It is about trust, identity, and family expectations.
We started session 1 in the middle of 2025 using CliftonStrengths methodology as a framework to provide a comprehensive set of data for the leaders to see themselves clearly.
The team coaching session 2 went deeper into the three unique domains of business strategies, ownership responsibilities and family legacy and dynamics. Coaching now takes place in the intersection of these three domains. Session 2 focuses on helping the leaders to identify how different strengths come to the forefront whenever they speak from specific hats (from the 3 domains) to each other. With the awareness, there is a more intentional approach to listen and converse as a group.
Sessions 3 and 4 took place in 2026 with the most recent one in July 2026. The sessions were used to plan, brainstorm and navigate specific goals linked to the future transformation of the business.
The team coaching sessions are ongoing and it has been a 10/10 learning experience for me.
