Spent an afternoon with seven business leaders. Two were online while the other five were in person. It was not my typical session but it was definitely an experience I thoroughly enjoyed.

What made this coaching session different was that the individuals not only wear hats as business leaders, they wear the hats of family members. They are siblings and cousins.

Family businesses are unique 🫆because of the ownership.

Many family businesses operate with overlapping roles (the same leader often wears the hat of the owner, management and family member simultaneously). This emotional complexity influences decision-making beyond profit and efficiency.

Stewardship, legacy, and generational continuity are part of the priorities. There is also the process of transitioning leadership. It is not just about competencies in running the business. It is about trust, identity, and family expectations.

The lens of strengths provides a comprehensive set of data that empowers these leaders to see:
✅ individual leadership strengths and blindspots. The data helps each leader identify and learn about key contributions they can make towards the business. Each person can use the data to see how to lead self, teams and business outcomes.

✅ Collective leadership team strengths and blindspots. The data helps the group identify alignment areas for strategic business planning and also potential areas of neglect.

In the short session with these leaders, I learned so much while facilitating and coaching the group. Watching how they interact while wearing these lens as owners, management and family members simultaneously was fascinating for me. Extremely rich emotional data. 😄Definitely a 10/10 learning experience for me!

Leadership Conversations - Strengths, Trust Building & Cross Cultural Cooperation

Cross Culture Workshop facilitation in pic 01, group discussions in pic 02 and group visiting of ancient site in pic 03

"This leadership program held in Lebanon was conducted for a group of 15 global leaders working in an NGO. The session focuses on strengths discovery, deepening trust, and difficult conversations. The results were greater self-awareness, and stronger conversational skills through deliberate practices. Interested in a similar program for your team?” Connect with Victor

🫸 Pushing the Limits ⚠️

What I learnt from my Lebanon 🇱🇧 trip.

Some context:

▶ It was a 5 days leadership retreat for an NGO and I was invited to facilitate 3/5 days, focusing on cross cultural cooperation and trust building.

▶ I had only 2 weeks to prepare amidst many other ongoing commitments. So I knew this work was going to really stretch me.

▶ I had participants from many different countries - Syria, Lebanon, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, USA, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, South Korea and Germany.

▶ It was my first time listening, conversing and learning from those from the Middle East, Russia and South America.

What I did:

▶ I needed an anchor to bridge the cultural differences. So I started with strengths as a language and a lens to build the container of safety.

▶ We explored how trust might look like in cross cultural work - what it looks like when it is strong and when it is broken.

▶ I taught a couple of leadership conversational skills and facilitated the practice - how leaders can generate context of trust and safety.

▶ I had 1 on 1 coaching with each person to process the emotions and learnings.

What I took away👇🏼

📍Listening for our bias and assumptions is crucial. It starts by being aware that we bring our bias into the conversations. On day 1, I felt I had so much to learn as I hear different stories in a very diverse context. I felt I was the odd one out as a Singaporean, living in my “safe” bubble.

📍Listening in a cross cultural context brings out more of the emotional and body context because of language challenges. For many, English is not the first language. The other aspects are heightened as a result. As I listened to the stories shared in English, I often experienced the intensity of the stories through the emotions and the body of the storyteller.

📍The Strengths Language truly deepens appreciation and respect for diversity. Once I facilitated the strengths conversations, the cross cultural differences was reduced and the strengths language facilitated conversations of trust building.

It was truly an eye-opening week of being, doing and learning. My strengths felt satisfied. I’m now more confident in navigating high tension and conflict work. #Command #SelfAssurance #Communication #Connectedness

Some teams are highly dysfunctional while others are in the learning zone.

In a learning zone, some key observables include members seeking feedback, embracing discomfort (for example displaying vulnerability to others), disagreeing and voicing the counter perspectives respectfully etc.

Last week, I had the privilege of doing a session for a leadership team in an intimate off site setting.

Started the session with some CliftonStrengths facilitation work and at the same time, I was paying attention to the team dynamics

I observed the interactions between team members, listened to the different conversations taking place and experienced the team dynamics that was being generated.

After 2 hours of facilitation, I assessed the team was ready for some deeper work.

Switching to team coaching mode, we contracted and opened up a space for the team to have a deeper conversation on trust.

I won’t share details but I love watching how things unfold. I saw different shifts taking place. Some shifts were immediate - shifting of the posture to listen attentively, shifting of energy to be more invested. Other shifts include choosing courage and acknowledging vulnerability, choosing to dream and see future possibilities.

Just watching how the team interact post session during dinner was fascinating for me.

Leadership teams can be functionally effective but seldom tight in their interpersonal dynamics.

This leadership team gives off a different vibe. It had a different spirit and soul.

May God bless this group of human beings to continue flourishing together.
